What is it that I love the most about Jane Austen? Easy: Mr. Darcy! Me and all of you, ladies.
According to an amusing poll made some years ago by the Orange Prize for Fiction, 1,900 women across the generations voted for Mr. Darcy as the man they would most like to go on a date with.
So, let’s talk a little bit about this curious Darcy-effect and why two centuries later he is still The Man…
One of the reasons why Darcy remains so popular to this day is that he symbolizes the archetype of finding a diamond in the rough. His character is aphrodisiac. At first impression, he seems arrogant and unfriendly. Only the love of his life can bring out his caring and sugary side. And also, integrity is a very sexy attribute in a man! Along with intelligence and mystery…
Besides - and very very important - he loves Elizabeth ARDENTLY. People don’t do anything ardently anymore.
Now let’s think about how men react when they’re rejected… Most of them don’t give a fuck and go after an easier prey. Elizabeth turns Darcy down and he doesn’t stop loving her. He’s not resentful. He will wait. He’s a well-educated man. A little example: when he told Elizabeth about his feelings, she gave him a really painful speech: "From the very beginning - from the first moment, I may almost say - of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form the groundwork of disapprobation on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry."
Remember what he replied? “Forgive me for having taken up so much of your time, and accept my best wishes for your health and happiness”. Never before have had women met a man who thrives so well under criticism. How could we not love it?
He provides Lizzie with romance and protection. I know, I know… The idea that we secretly want someone to protect us may seem horribly prehistoric but… it’s intrinsically hardwired. And come on, you wouldn’t mind that a hottie like Darcy came in your rescue. No one would!
Well, and let’s be honest here, he is handsome, rich and tall. Those three things are always going to stand the test of time.
He changed for Lizzie, and he did it with glamour without betraying his authenticity. He’s a sexy arrogant loving gentleman who knows how to act before a woman.
Girls, it’s no wonder Darcy is fiction. And no wonder we’re still obsessed…
